 Seeing The Light
Article by Mark Golding

During the early 1980s, a man called Herb Kern, began to believe that his seasonal cycle of fatigue and depression may be caused by the shorter and duller daylight hours of winter. Herb approached the National Institute for Mental Health (USA) with his observations. There, doctors proposed a treatment whereby Herb was exposed to bright light, equivalent to summer sunlight. By the fourth day of light exposure his symptoms had virtually disappeared (Lewy et al 1982). This was the start of our acknowledging the condition that has come to be known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the Winter Blues.

In all mammals, the desire to sleep is brought on by the secretion of a hormone called melatonin. In the evening the pineal gland reacts to the diminishing levels of daylight and begins producing melatonin. Melatonin is then released into the blood and flows through the body ...

It was there that he first began to notice that children of the same ages answered true/false questions similarly.

He returned to Switzerland and spent many years studying and conversing with children. He realized through his conversations that when asked a question a child did not necessarily give an incorrect answer just because the answer wasn't an adult response. They instead gave logical answers b...

 My Son is Bipolar
Article by Terry Coyier

When I became pregnant, almost eight years ago, the first thing that crossed my mind, after my initial shock and elation, was the fact that my child would be predisposed to bipolar disorder. Not only had I been diagnosed with bipolar, but my unborn son's aunt and grandmother on his father's side, had also been treated for depression. Since mood disorders ran in both families, his risk was high - anywhere from 15-75%. At the time, terminating the pregnancy was not an option, besides that, I wanted a child. I was deemed a "high-risk" patient, due to my condition and the fact that it was imperative that I remain on my medications. Luckily I had two very well educated physicians who watched my pregnancy carefully. I had a special ultrasound that checked for any type of abnormality in his spine, head or brain. By the time I gave birth, at the age of thirty, I was confident my son wa...

 The Rainbow Behind the Trees
Article by Annette Bridges

I've never really been a basketball fan, but since the Dallas Mavericks were in the championship series, my Texas pride made me watch. With each agonizing game (specifically the last four), I remembered why I'm not a basketball fan -- the game seems filled with unfair foul calls. I know I sound like a sore loser -- and I am. My Texas pride may be acting up again!

Still, even though I screamed out my frustrations over what I considered unfair calls, I also yelled for the boys to step up their game. I encouraged them to do a better job at making their shots, rebounding and so forth. Even if some foul calls were bogus, I still believed they had the ability to win the games.

Now that the series is over, I'm reflecting on how the game of basketball is sometimes like our lives. Or at least like my life.

Many times I've felt life was unfair -- like nothing was going my way....

Postpartum depression is experienced by over 70% of women who have recently given birth. The symptoms for this condition may last for hours or days, and patients will be irritable, unable to concentrate, and may also experience a loss of sleep or headaches.

The diagnosis for postpartum depression is similar to other forms of major depression. However, the difference between PPD and other forms of depression is that those who are suffering from PPD will typically begin having symptoms a month after they have given birth. In addition to this, the condition may also develop during the pregnancy as well. Many of the ca...
