Article by Lance Winslow If you attend networking clubs, service clubs or Chamber of Commerce Meetings to meet people, promote your company and also help the local community while joining with other businesses in a common cause, well I salute you for your efforts. It is great to see like-minded business folks out doing the right thing. For those of you who do not do such things to help their business, perhaps you sell to people who are all outside your area where you live and instead you network online. If you are considering doing a little networking and have not yet done so, well good for you and I have a bit of advice and that is; it is somewhat unwise to go to such meetings and start selling to everyone you meet. Working a room is fun and it is great to see if you can at least meet each person at the meeting, if there is time. But more importantly you need to learn and most of all listen to them and... Article by Ellen Dunnigan If you are like most business professionals you have attended a networking meeting where you are asked to describe your business, how it works and what you can do for a potential client in 60 seconds or less. As I attend these meetings, I see many competent professionals stumble because they try to say too much. Wrapped up in describing what they do, they lose sight of the real goal – leaving a memorable impression! So ask yourself, what can you say in 60 seconds to get noticed and be remembered?
Article by Lance Winslow If you are a small business and your area has been devastated by a large category hurricane like any of those that happened during the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season then you know that you must rebuild your business. This means you need to get out get business, as many of your customers who were providing cash flow for you and your family are no longer customers and may never return to the area. If you are in a small business you're part of the community and you must help rebuild the community, as that is your responsibility. Sure you can get out of town and even take your business and knowledge and experience and move somewhere else to start again. But this will not satisfy you nor is the right thing to do. And you probably know that. Now then, let me tell you that the community that works together stays together and those businesses, which support the commun... Article by Linda Peterson Memorial Day has just passed marking the beginning of summer. Summer is the season of graduations, weddings, barbeques, vacations and networking! Have you ever considered that these summer events put you in front of a whole new group of contacts or people you haven’t seen in awhile? Are you prepared to leverage this networking opportunity for what you can give and receive? A simple networking strategy can make this a profitable and social season. Know What You’re Going to Say Isn’t it true that when attending any event, one of two questions will be asked? If you know the person, they will ask “By the way, what are you up to these days?” If you’re meeting a person for the first time, they will inevitably ask you, “So, what do you do?” Experienced networkers know that this is the perfect opportunity for a marketing sound bite aka elevator p... Article by Abe Cherian Judging by the popularity of instant message programs, chat rooms, and discussion forums, it would seem logical to conclude that people enjoy interacting with one another in an almost anonymous, virtual environment. Although people enjoy the anonymity they still crave attention and relationships with other people. Sometimes, the internet is so impersonal, and cold that getting a nice email from an actual person that doesn't want your money is almost exciting. People especially enjoy interacting with those of similar interests. Why not use this to the advantage of your business? Internet marketers don't usually have anybody in their lives that shares the same passion. And, as a whole, Internet marketers are very passionate about what they do and love discussing it with others who share that same passion. By creating friendships with other online marketers in your n... Article by Joshua Feinberg Training seminars are a savvy marketing strategy. Instead, the marketing tends to be very reactive to whatever is happening to the business currently. You want to build the business through word-of-mouth, but you don't have any system for generating referrals or word-of-mouth business. For most it gets even worse than this because you're passively waiting for clients to introduce you to prospective new clients. It's a long slow process to build your business through referrals this way. Even if you have a systematic approach your success will likely only produce a trickle or small stream of new business. Create Referral Alliance Partnerships If you really want to create a flood of referrals, then consider establishing referral alliance partnerships. Identifying the right referral alliance partnersh... Article by Lance Winslow If you enjoy going to networking business social gatherings or Chamber of Commerce Mixers as a way to develop a referral network and have some fun and do a little business then you need to stop trying to sell so hard to other salesmen and start talking about how you two can work together in a common cause, sharing information, customer databases and business card stacks. Why? Well, because one salesmen at a business meeting is not going to make your year most likely for your sales goals, but one sales person who is on the ball may know 50 people who could in fact give you a good running start at achieving your sales objectives. So, stop trying to sell to other salespeople at networking gatherings and start discussing how you might work together to achieve both your objectives. Ask the other party to tell you the advantages of all of their products or services and what type... Article by Michael Russell As a business owner, you know you should be attending networking events. But, it is hard - not everyone can walk into a room full of strangers and jump right into business discussions. You will need to prepare, practice and implement the following suggestions to make the most of these business networking meetings. Before the event, ask what the dress code is. Depending on the type of event, dress could be formal, or informal. You will feel much more relaxed if you are dressed as everyone else is. Make a list of what your goals are for this event. Do you want to make sure you meet specific people? Are you wanting to work on existing relationships? Do you want to meet new potential customers? Do you want to meet potential business partners? Focusing on a particular purpose will make it easier for you to manage your time at the event. Make sure you have a small note... Article by Stephen Hopson I've only been in Ohio 8 months. Making new friends in a new town where you know no one is not easy; however, surrounding yourself with the right people is critical to your ability to overcome adversity. Oprah says it best: "Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down" - Oprah Winfrey Last night I had a small party for friends from my church. I was fortunate to have a group of people who enjoyed themselves to the fullest without any air or pretense or expectation. Laughter came easily. We all felt comfortable in each other's presence. It was a wonderful feeling. Are you feeling alone? Join a church. Become a member of Toastmasters if you want to be a better public speaker. What about local civic groups including but not limited to Kiwanis, Lion's or Rotary clubs? They provide ... Article by Mikel Freije Networking is more than just putting your business name out there for people to find you, but it is also a part of getting to know people, who are going to spread the word about what you do, what you sell, and that are going to support you in all that you do. Networking is going to involve getting to know as many people in life as you can, and putting your business in front of those people, so they will represent your name, your business, and will tell others about what you have to offer. If your business requires that you travel often, or perhaps you travel often to find supplies, visit relatives or just because you like it. You should make it a point to get to know those who you are sitting beside, those who are surrounding you on the plane, even those who are sitting on the bench while waiting in the airport. Make it a point to meet and greet at least one new person a day. Article by Lance Winslow Most people have heard about networking to attract new business and develop long-term relationships to increase referrals and increase sales in their businesses. Indeed it is a lot of fun to do business this way and it is much easier too. Networking events such as chamber of commerce mixers and social business type gatherings make a perfect place for such things. For those who are a little unsure of them selves there is another way. Consider if you will the online networking type sites like MySpace and the similar sites set up for small online businesses and professionals, which work much the same way. Indeed both of these venues are very similar, one is face to face and the other is keyboard to keyboard. Both require almost the exact same skills to participate and if one is shy or an introvert they may find good practice with networking online. For those who like to netwo... Article by Mikel Freije Your previous customers are going to be valuable to your future business. As you get each new customer you want to network with that customer again in the future, to keep your business in their mind, and to keep them on as a walking and talking billboard for your business. The future of your business is going to evolve to include repeat customers, and referral customers, both of which are vital to the ongoing relationship of your business, the consumer, and the local surroundings of your business. How can you network with your previous customers? Even if your customers are online – or if they are offline, you can network with your customers. A simple note, or email is going to do the trick. Ask about their day; talk with them by name, and offer advice or to continue with the conversation when they have time to chat with you. Talk with your customers about what they have p... Article by Mikel Freije Have you ever been invited to a networking breakfast? Or a networking lunch? These may should sort of strange to the person who has never been to one before, but these types of situations are key to moving yourself to talk with others about what you do, how you do it, and what you provide in the form of services and products. The more people you know and talk with the stronger your network of business contacts and customer contact is going to become. The first step to successful local networking is going to involve doing it You need to get out there, and be where other business owners are, or at lea... Article by Mikel Freije Owning your own business of any type is going to require some amount of networking. Networking is a method of building awareness of your business, among people who may be likely at one time or another to use your products, your services or to refer someone else to your business. Networking is all about getting to know other people, and locally your best bet in finding additional network contacts is going to be with other business owners. You can find many types of networking opportunities around you. Every club and every association that you belong too is going to be a part of your network. From there, every person you come into contact with and every person you talk with is going to be part of your network. Make a lasting impression You can make a lasting impression on the people that you meet by talking about what you know best, and by talking about topics that are... Article by Stephen Hopson Can you think of all the people in your life who helped you, especially when you were experiencing adversity or when you were at a crossroad of sorts? Was it...... *a teacher like Mrs. Jordan (my fifth grade teacher) who said the right thing at the right time? *the person who wrote a glowing recommendation letter that won you a major scholarship or admission to your school of choice? *mentors who appeared at just the right time to guide you personally and professionally? *the gatekeeper who put your important phone call through to the company bigwig? *a friend who consoled you through a painful time? *a stranger who did you an extraordinary act of kindness? *someone who opened the door for you, leading to incredible opportunities? *the minister who listened to you for hours? *family members who've supported you with love and ... Article by Referral marketing is the most profitable kind of marketing there is. For as long as there has been small business, owners and service providers have been talking about referral marketing. Most small businesses point to referrals as their primary source of business. It just doesn't happen consistently enough to generate all the clients a small business can handle. So where does most of your business come from? If you're like most business owners or independent professionals, you'd probably tell me that a majority of your business comes through referrals. But, if I asked what you do to guarantee a constant flow of referrals, would you have an answer? Almost every business owner and independent professional I've checked with doesn't have an answer. You're simply focused on doing great work and keeping your clients happy. Because happy client... Article by Lance Winslow If you go to a networking meetings or Chamber of Commerce Mixer it is indeed important to get to know everyone and not necessarily launch into a full court press sales pitch, as that does get a little annoying and that is no way to win friends and influence people at all. Nevertheless, too much idle chitchat about the weather and you are liable to lose your audience. Most superstar entrepreneurs and those who are running fast moving companies are not interested in endless chitchat. In fact you are probably very lucky if they are in attendance in the first place. If you are well-spoken that is a good thing and yet too many people use this skill incorrectly and will take about; he said, she said for way too long. Or discuss the weather, nice day isn’t it? Indeed it is. Yes, but remember last week? Oh yes I sure do. When this sort of stuff goes on and on for 10-20 minut... Article by Lance Winslow Over the years I have run local businesses and multi-State operations as a franchise system. One thing I learned early on in my 20s was that networking works at the local level and later I realized that networking at the National Level works well too. Why does networking work so well and why have social networks on the Internet surpassed all other websites now? Well it is simple because networking and such socialization is indeed an innate way that humans interact. Call it primate politics if you will? One thing I learned over the years is to make huge databases of the people you meet and all you can about what they do, their hobbies, contacts, business interests and location. Why? Well you just never know when you might need them or you will run across something that they need. About 10-years ago I established a larger network of my closest and smartest business all... Article by Lance Winslow After years of networking with individuals I began to notice something rather interesting and I just thought it was about time I share this with you all. I believe there is something called; Negative Networking and is more akin to Bridge Burning. It comes from several unfortunate scenarios during business networking events. One of the most interesting things I have seen over the years was people who get into clashes over politics at networking events. Generally most business people will be fairly pro-business and often puts them into a more Libertarian or Republic Perspective or at least that is the way it use to be, now you just never know. I have watched people burn bridges and end up doing negative networking. Occasionally, I would watch a competitor at a networking event get into a clash and not more than ten minutes later the person they were talking to was all over m... |
